Summer Institute 2010
Boston Arts Academy’s 7th Annual
Summer Institute for Arts in Education
Monday, June 28th – Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Boston Arts Academy Mission
The Boston Arts Academy, a pilot school within the Boston Public Schools, is charged with being a laboratory and a beacon for artistic and academic innovation. The Boston Arts Academy prepares a diverse community of aspiring artist-scholars to be successful in their college or professional careers and to be engaged members of a democratic society.

Institute Overview
The Boston Arts Academy (BAA), a Coalition of Essential Schools Mentor School and a Massachusetts Department of Education Compass School, will hold its 6th Annual Summer Institute for Arts in Education June 29th through July 2nd at the school’s campus in Boston’s Fenway area. The four-day program will provide educators with a unique opportunity to learn about this award-winning school and to interact in an intimate setting with the school’s faculty and staff, as well as with other area educators and community leaders.

In addition, the Institute will provide participants with a window on how BAA, a full-inclusion urban high school, is using the arts as a catalyst for school change and to successfully narrow the achievement gap. Since its founding in 1998, the BAA has consistently sent over 92% of graduates on to two and four year colleges.

Details
The 2010 Boston Arts Academy’s Summer Institute for Arts in Education is a 4-day intensive professional development experience for educators interested in school change.

Hosted by Boston Arts Academy, a pilot school in the Boston Public School system, this institute will bring groups of educators together from Boston Public Schools, as well as districts and schools across the state, country and world to share practices and learn from the successes and challenges that BAA has experienced since opening eleven years ago. BAA faculty and other community partners will present workshops and facilitate discussions on using the arts as a modality for school change. The Institute allows educators from schools of all kinds to learn how to use the arts to enhance curricula and to boost student achievement.

The Institute will have two strands:
  • Teaching and Learning - for educators looking for student-centered, art-integrated strategies and techniques to bring into the classroom in both arts and academic settings.
  • School Structures - primarily for school leaders looking for organizational models designed to foster greater accountability, to increase resource development and to boost student achievement.

Who Attends the Summer Institute?
The Summer Institute for Arts in Education is for groups of educators from the same school or district office who are interested in school transformation. Elementary, Middle and High School educators are urged to attend in groups of three or more, preferably with school administrators, in order to maximize the opportunity for change upon returning to their home schools. In addition, district-level leaders are encouraged to attend to help facilitate transforming schools on the district level.

Groups will work together with BAA Summer Institute Staff to learn how BAA uses the arts as a modality for school change. Each group will have built-in time with Institute staff to develop an action plan that can be implemented in their own school or district.
